The science is clear, the threat from climate change is growing year on year. And for Brazil, the impacts are already devastating.
It’s not just lifestyles or the rainforest at risk – but livelihoods. Over the last 20 years, fires and floods have already shrunk the agriculture and construction sectors by 37%. Unless we take urgent action today, the costs of climate change will tear through Brazil’s economy.
By 2050, river and coastal flooding could cost the economy R$331 billion. Rising temperatures and shrinking water supplies could cut agricultural production by 18% – more if the Amazon rainforest becomes too weak to create rain clouds in its basin. And by 2040, the cost of extreme weather could hit R$119 billion.
If carbon levels remain high, Brazil could be 3% poorer by 2050 – rising to at least 7.4% by 2100. That’s almost twice as bad as the country’s recession caused by the coronavirus crisis.
